The Initiative
A landmark public-private partnership
Maryland Public AI is a first-of-its-kind state-level initiative designed to ensure that every public school graduate across Maryland's 24 school systems is equipped with foundational AI literacy — the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding to thrive in an AI-enabled world.
The initiative spans teacher training, industry-informed curriculum developed in partnership with Maryland's research universities, student hackathons, internships, and clear career pathways from high school into the Maryland tech workforce.
By anchoring AI education in Maryland's values of equity, service, and innovation, this program ensures that no student — regardless of ZIP code — is left behind as the economy transforms.

Is this only for Maryland-based companies?
The initiative is rooted in Maryland, but we welcome technology leaders from anywhere who are committed to supporting Maryland's public school students and the broader state community.
When will students start learning AI?
Teacher training begins in Summer 2026. Pilot schools will begin the foundational AI literacy curriculum in the 2026–27 school year, with a plan to expand across Maryland's 24 school systems in subsequent years.
How is funding being used?
Funds are directed toward AI teacher training, curriculum development in partnership with Maryland universities, student hackathons and events, and the infrastructure needed to scale the program statewide.
I lead a school system outside Maryland — can you help us?
Yes! We plan to open-source our entire project — including curriculum, server and service configurations, tool lists, and budgets — so other states can replicate and adapt Maryland's model. Stay tuned to this website for updates.
Will students use AI to do their work instead of thinking for themselves?
This is one of the most important questions we hear. Our curriculum is designed to teach students how to think alongside AI, not instead of it. Just as calculators didn't replace the need to understand math, AI tools don't replace the need for critical thinking, creativity, and judgment. We're building a program that develops those skills, with AI as a tool students learn to use thoughtfully and responsibly.
